ya i agree just because he lost that fight with edgar people are looking down on him if he were to of win that fight maia would not even be voted lol thats sad maia is real good but come on its BJ PENN, he hands down has the best BJJ, i mean come on dont you guys remember his fights, he became the first American-born winner of the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship in the black-belt, just think about a fight between maia and penn even if he he is in light weight and maia in middle penn would def beat him in a BJJ match for sure.....it only took bj 3 years to get a black belt in bjj when it takes others around 7-10 years to get a black belt...,So are you guys really serious maia better in BJJ then penn thats a joke keep up on your fighters please before making that assumption! here is something for you people who have no clue about bj penn.....
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
In 1997 Penn began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Ralph Gracie, eventually earning his purple belt from Gracie.[9] At that point he moved to Nova União where he was eventually awarded his black belt in 2000 by Andre Pederneiras.[9] A few weeks later he became the first non-Brazilian to win the black-belt division of the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.[10] While Penn's most well-known and prestigious achievement was placing first in the black belt division in the 2000 world championships, he had success at the Mundials in previous years. In 1999, at the age of 20, Penn finished 3rd in the brown belt division, losing only to Fernando Terere.
While most people need a decade or more to become a black belt, Penn had, with only three years of training, not only received a black belt but defeated people who had been training their entire lives on his way to winning the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship.[11] Penn is thought to have earned the fastest black belt ever and he has the world record for it too.

I'm pretty sure Thales Leites is not signed to the UFC anymore.
I voted Maia over Penn since Maia is the a guy that always seems to dominate as soon as the fight goes down. And we have now seen Penn unable to do anything from his back thanks to Frankie Edgar.

nog is the best pure BJJ guy, bj is right behind him. i was incredibly unimpressed with maia in the fight, pretty overrated imo.
That's exactly why I didn't want to give the GSP vs Penn fight as an example. Penn's fans will never forget the greasing, although I personally think it wouldn't have made much difference. I mean I don't think I've seen BJ submit anyone from his back (I'm probably mistaken though). And when you're on your back, to be a threat you have to go for submissions, and different ones. I always though that off his back he was kind of overrated. Not that he's not good, just I don't think he's at the top on that matter. Maybe with all his accolades in BJJ championships, he might have neglected it in his training.
And Maia on that last fight was advancing position at will, and he almost locked a submission on a BJJ blackbelt at least twice, and you say you're incredibly unimpressed?! You gotta remember not everyone is like Sonnen where you see the opening you lock the submission and that's it, it's over... A BJJ blackbelt should know all the ins and outs of any submission, and therefore it would be much harder to submit someone like that.
Maia's Jiu-Jitsu is very impressive and his credentials speak for themself. As well as that, his submission ability off of his back is quite good. I was a little unimpressed with not being able to submit a completely helpless opponent on the mat (LORD KNOWS how Miranda got his Black Belt, as his BJJ has never looked that good), but he is still a world class BJJ fighter.
Big Nog is also very good, but I question his ability at this point in his career. In a pure grappling match, I suppose he would still be a beast.
I would say out of the poll options:
1. Big Nogueira
2. Maia
3. Penn
4. Almeida
5. Leites
--------------------------------
Personally I don't think 3, 4, or 5 are "well rounded" as they can only submit people off of the top. You don't see many triangles or submissions off of their back, but Maia and Big Nog have many submissions off of their back.
